Beginning Lessons in Brushwork by Pat Marsello

When: January

This class will focus on technique, discipline, and a growing awareness of the possibilities between ink, brush, and paper. Brushwork is as old as Asia, and although my teachers taught me the Chinese way, I have also studied Sumi-e, or Japanese brushwork for the last twenty years.

These days I paint primarily on clay but the class will be taught on paper, the way I was taught, through mindfulness and repetition. Brushwork painting involves dedication and skill but is also, ultimately, a way of life, a way of "seeing" the world through the simplicity of black and white, the stroke of a brush and the white space around it.

Price: $200 plus a materials cost for ink stick, ink stone and one happy dot brush.

Includes: 8 weeks of 3 hour instruction on the three friends: bamboo, pine and plum, composition and sampling of papers. Classes of 5 students each encourage personal instruction. All paper is included.
